If you’ve been onboard a superyacht, you’ve likely walked on a handmade carpet or rug produced by Luxury Carpet Studio. In an industry unparalleled in class and luxury the devil is in the details, every time. Flooring plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the experience and life onboard is to the standards expected from our industry.

Luxury Carpet Studio worked alongside Francesco Paskokwski on Cantiere delle Marche’s 40-metre RJ 130, and SuperYacht Times caught up with Vincenzo Solenne, CEO of the bespoke carpet maker to hear more about the project. Photo: Guillaume Plisson You supplied and designed the flooring for CdM’s superyacht RJ 130, can you tell us a little about the choice materials and the reasoning behind these decisions?

Design choices are usually the result of clear input from the owner. After discussions between designer and client, where we look at all the decorative aspects, comes the trickiest phase of the project: finding a functional, sustainable solution to fit the instructions we received.

For the RJ 130’ Class project our client the design imperative was to create an ambiance that imbued  softness, elegance and a heightened perception of luxury. To create this we opted for a heavy use of natural materials, such as bamboo, virgin and merino wools and silk.CdM’s RJ 130 is a full-custom yacht, is this a typical project for Luxury Carpet Studio?

Almost all of our designs are custom; although in some instances we do draw inspiration from our past collections, as we have quite a large portfolio. That being said, we also modify and customise each project we work on to create unique characteristics. Sometimes it’s the colour, the pattern, or the overarching themes. Other times we alter material choices to meet the specific needs of our customers.

Nothing is standard, everything is made ad hoc, in close co-operation between us and the client. These partnerships are the best part of our work as they allow us to grow together, with examples of excellence in the sector. We get to appreciate the wonderful things we’ve created together. Luxury Carpet Studio worked alongside Francesco Paskokwski on the RJ 130. Was this the first time you collaborated on a project?

No, we have worked many times with Francesco Paskokwski both directly and indirectly, going through some of the most important shipyards of the world. Do you have many long-standing clients for production yachts?

For years now we have been working shoulder to shoulder with some of the most important shipyards in the world, and we have an exclusive business unit. We see each yacht as a challenge to win; to make unique, distinctive yachts each and with its own identity. Our manifesto is to create custom-made projects, whether they’re production or not, in honour of the Italian tradition of Beauty. What differentiates Luxury Carpet Studio from its competitors?

One of the core facets that distinguishes us from other studios is how deftly we nuance effects and colours within our carpets. Akin to clouds, the shades and patterns fluctuate in natural and elegant ways, oscillating from dark to light tones, as requested by most of our clients. However, our brand signature is our 3D approach and feel; we don’t only consider the patterns and materials, but the depth and thickness of our carpets. This is what makes our products recognisable worldwide. What are some of the core considerations when planning the flooring on a yacht?

Everything depends on the customer requirements, each project is different. Our aim is to completely satisfy the expectations of our clients, every time. Our starting point is always an assessment: we consider the yacht’s dimensions, shape and the requested materials, and much more. Our solutions are tailor made and highly personalised. Sustainability is a hot topic; how do you plan to reduce the environmental impact of your products?

I have always been concerned about handing over a better planet to future generations, and so as a  producer of handmade carpets and rugs we carefully consider every solution. The development of green, sustainably manufactured products has been the natural consequence of this concern. For our market of high-end luxury products, nothing but the best is adequate, which is why we create a green collection using Econyl, a synthetic fibre built by nylon waste, in order to reduce as much impact on the Earth as possible. Did you have to make many changes to your product portfolio to cater to yachting?

No transition or change because we are born for yachting. The context is different, but our  professionalism stays the same. In fact, our carpets have all the requested certifications, both for the hospitality and yacht sectors.
